Cottonwood

Valerie “Val” Hambleton was born on March 15, 1947, in Coventry, England, to William Allan Brotherwood and Ruby Eileen Brotherwood. She passed away peacefully on January 25th.

Awarded a bursary for high academic attainment at a young age, she went on to train as a teacher — a calling that shaped her life.

After moving to the United States in the early 1970s, she acquired The Little Red Schoolhouse, later expanded and renamed The William Allan Academy in honor of her father. Through her dedication to education, she impacted the lives of many children and families.

Valerie later made her home in Cottonwood, Arizona, where she enjoyed the beauty of the Mingus Mountains, long walks in nature, and caring for her beloved cats.

She will be remembered for her strength, independence, and lasting contribution to education.

A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, February 18th at 2:00 p.m. at Westcott Funeral Home in Cottonwood.

Family flowers only please. Donations in Valerie’s memory may be made to the Humane Society of Sedona.
