Maxine Moxon-Davis

Maxine Pearl McKenzie Moxon-Davis passed on September 11, 2021, at Sedona Winds in Sedona, Arizona. She succumbed to cancer and old age being 96 years old. She was born September 1, 1925, to Homer McKenzie and Esther Pearl Mackerall McKenzie.

She spent her early years n the family farm southwest of Dallas, South Dakota. She attended elementary school at the McKenzie School, high school at Dallas, South Dakota, graduating as valedictorian in 1943.

Maxine worked for one year in Winner, South Dakota to save money to enroll at the University of Nebraska in 1944. She studied in the field of business administration. She was made a tassel (pep club) during her freshman year. She worked at the White Electric Company from 24-30 hours a week to pay expenses.

During summer vacation at home, Maxine met Duane Moxon, a recent graduate of S.D. S. C., a soil scientist who worked for the United States Department of Arizona mapping the soils of Tripp and Gregory Companies. They enjoyed many local dances together. Maxine returned to the University of Nebraska for her sophomore year. Letters were exchanged almost every intervening day.

Maxine and Duane were married August 27, 1946, at Gregory Methodist Church on her parent’s 25th wedding anniversary. Two sons were born to this union, Robert Duane in 1954 and William Lee in 1958. Duane’s work made for many household moves.

In 1964, while living at the Pine Ridge Indian Agency, Maxine enrolled at Chadron St. College and received her bachelor's degree and teaching certificate. She graduated 9th in her senior class.

Maxine did accounting work most of her life. She taught math and art at Pine Ridge, South Dakota, at Turtle Mt. Chippewa Reservation at Belcourt, North Dakota, Math at Ft. Lauderdale, FL, and then became an auditor at Miami I.R.S. regional office. Then was made an agent at the North Dade I.R.S. office. She and Duane retired in South Dakota on her family farm,

Duane passed on in 1996, after they celebrated their 50th anniversary. Maxine married Morton Davis, Cottonwood, Arizona, in 1999. He died in 2012. In 2016, Maxine made Arizona her residence.

Maxine is preceded in death by her grandparents, her parents Homer and Pearl McKenzie, two husbands Duane and Morton, siblings baby Elizabeth Jane McKenzie, Dr. James (Loretta) McKenzie, Kenneth (Mardis) McKenzie, Shirley Ann (Clair) Turgeon, nieces, nephews, and in-laws.

She is survived by sons Robert of Rimrock, AZ, and William of Houston, TX; grandchildren Lane (Marisa) and Joshua, Abigail and Jackson and many nieces and nephews.

Her ashes are being interred at the Dallas Cemetery between Duane Moxon and her mother Pearl McKenzie.
