Frances “Darlene” Heart Calvert passed away surrounded by the love of her family, leaving behind a legacy of service, compassion, and love that touched countless lives throughout the Verde Valley and beyond.

Born on July 15, 1933, in Mesa, Arizona, Darlene attended elementary school in Mesa and graduated from West Phoenix Union High School in 1952, where she proudly served as a majorette with the school band. Following graduation, she entered nursing school at Good Samaritan Hospital. As part of her training, she spent months at a time in Cottonwood working at Marcus J. Lawrence Memorial Hospital, learning the unique challenges and rewards of rural healthcare.

It was in Cottonwood that she met the love of her life and soulmate, Donald “Red” Calvert. The two were married on November 5, 1955, and together built a life rooted in family, community, and service. They were blessed with two sons, Doyle and Dale.

Darlene dedicated 45 years of her life to nursing, much of it as an OB nurse. She loved caring for mothers and babies and took great pride in helping bring new life into the world. Over the years, she helped welcome generations of Verde Valley residents into their first moments of life, and many local families have a connection to her compassionate care. Her love for babies never faded. Even in her later years, her face would light up whenever she saw a baby, always eager to offer a smile, a wave, or a kind word.

Later, she carried on another family legacy when she took over Verde Floral after her mother-in-law, Deborah Calvert, remarried. Whether through nursing, flowers, public service, or simple acts of kindness, Darlene devoted her life to caring for others and making the world around her a little brighter.

A true pioneer in her community, Darlene made history as the first woman elected to the Cottonwood Town Council. She believed deeply in serving others and helping her community grow and thrive.

Above all else, Darlene's greatest gift was her heart. She never met a stranger and had a remarkable ability to make people feel welcome, valued, and loved. Over the course of her life, she embraced countless friends, neighbors, and loved ones as family, opening her home and her heart to those who needed care, guidance, support, or simply a place to belong.

Darlene was preceded in death by her husband, Donald “Red” Calvert; her beloved sons, Doyle and Dale Calvert; her parents, Walter and Minnie Heart; her brother, Frank Heart; and her mother-in-law, Deborah Calvert.

She is survived by her grandchildren, Wyndie Whitney, Donny Calvert, and Brooke Calvert; her great-granddaughters, Teagan Whitney and Scarlette Whitney; Niece Lori Talley, great niece Brittany Matson and the many extended family members, friends, and “adopted” children and grandchildren whose lives she enriched and nurtured as her own.

Darlene's legacy lives on in the family she cherished, the community she helped shape, the babies she welcomed into the world, the patients she comforted, the flowers she shared, and the countless lives she touched with her generosity, strength, and unwavering love.

She will be deeply missed, lovingly remembered, and forever carried in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.

Viewing and funeral service will be held on Thursday June 25, 2026 from 5pm - 7pm at Westcott Funeral Home, 1013 E. Mingus Ave. Cottonwood, AZ 86326.

Funeral Mass will be held on Friday June 26, 2026 at 11am at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 700 N Bill Gray Rd, Cottonwood, AZ 86326.

Burial will take place at Valley View Cemetery directly following Mass on Friday June 26, 2026.
