Obituary

Carey Lee Owens (Heidmann), 68, of Clarkdale, AZ, passed away following a short illness on May 7th, 2026. Born in Flagstaff, AZ on March 30th, 1958, Carey was the daughter of Leroy (Pat) and Gloria Heidmann.

Carey spent much of her early life in northern Arizona, though the family relocated to Tucson for several years before returning home to Flagstaff. Carey attended Flagstaff High School, where she played flute and clarinet in the school band. She graduated in 1976, and enjoyed travelling to Washington D.C. for the bicentennial, followed by a tour around Europe the summer before college.

Carey attended Northern Arizona University, where she graduated with a degree in Political Science. While there, Carey met beloved husband Carl, and the two were married on August 9, 1981. They welcomed their only child Rachel on September 7, 1986. The family relocated to the East Coast shortly after and resided in northern Virginia for over 20 years.

Carey returned home to AZ and took on the role of caretaker for parents, where she lived until the time of her passing. In addition to caretaking, Carey found renewed purpose through her role at House of Ruth, where she lovingly gave back to the community through her service.

Carey is survived by daughter Rachel Cantrell (David) of Knoxville, TN, their two children Jacob and Benjamin, brother Mark Heidmann of Los Angeles, CA, and father Leroy Heidmann of Clarkdale, AZ. Carey was preceded in death by her mother Gloria and husband Carl.

Carey was well known for her impeccable fashion sense, eclectic taste in movies and music, and love of babies, animals, and great food (especially chocolate!). Her grandchildren were her pride and joy, and she loved sharing their latest photos and stories at every opportunity.

A memorial service will be held at Our Shepherd Lutheran Church (1090 S Page Springs Road, Cornville, AZ, 86325) on July 20th, 2026, at 10:30am. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to House of Ruth Pregnancy Care Center.
