Obituary

Marian Nichols Hondrum passed away on Thursday, July 17, 2014. She was 92 years old. Marian Elsie Nichols was born February 2, 1922 in Garden City, South Dakota. She came from a long line of Irish/Danish farmers who settled in the upper Midwest. She graduated from high school on Ortonville, Minnesota and completed Teacher Training there. While working as a teacher in a one room country schoolhouse, she met Solway (Bud) Hondrum when he was working as a construction engineer in the area.
She and Bud were married on November 29, 1941 in Minneapolis, Minnesota, after which Bud entered the U.S. Army Air Corp during WWII.
By the time the war ended, Marian and Bud had a daughter, Ann, and a son, Steven Olaf. Two more sons entered the family, Robin Leigh and Donald Bruce. The family moved to Phoenix, Arizona for Bud's work as a civil engineer-and Marian learned to live in the desert.
Marian and Bud bought a home near 13th Street and Bethany Home Road in Phoenix. Their children attended elementary school and high school in the area. All four of their children graduated from Arizona universities. Later, Bud's work took them to Parker, Arizona and Albuquerque, New Mexico.
Their children married and started families of their own. Bud and Marian enjoyed five grandsons and one granddaughter. Marian now has eleven great-grandchildren,
Bud retired in 1985, and he and Marian spent retirement introducing their grandchildren to America's National Parks. When Bud passed away in 2001, Marian moved from Albuquerque to Cottonwood to be close to Ann in Sedona.
Marian's greatest accomplishment was her family. Marian and Bud were married for 60 years. She was totally dedicated to her husband, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Solway (Bud) and her son, Robin Leigh. She is survived by her daughter Ann (Gary), son Steven (Helene) and son Donald (Sarah), six grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, July 24, 2014 at 10 A.M. at Cottonwood Village, 201 E. Mingus Ave., Cottonwood, Arizona.
